چکیده

Padina pavonica (Linnaeus) Thivy 1960 is a brown algae that antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer effects generally used in soup, salad, other dishes. However, no studies have been reported on safe consumption humans to date. For this purpose, study was conducted determine the cytotoxic genotoxic of P. lymphocytes cultured from human blood. The water extract added into culture tubes at various concentrations (0.5-1000 ?g/mL). Cytotoxic were determined by MTT assay. Antioxidant/oxidant status evaluated total antioxidant capacity (TAC) oxidative (TOS) assays. Genotoxic investigated sister chromatid exchanges micronucleus Our results showed had effects, even higher concentrations. 1000 ?g/mL concentration caused an increase (P<0.05) TOS levels while significantly reducing cell viability. low (50 100 ?g/mL) increased TAC levels. In conclusion, can be safely consumed with its non-genotoxic properties manner dose-dependent.

Brown Algae Padina sanctae-crucis Børgesen: A Potential Nutraceutical

Padina sanctae-crucis Børgesen is distributed worldwide in tropical and subtropical seas; belongs to the Dictyotaceae family, and has proven to be an exceptional source of biologically active compounds. Four compounds were isolated and identified, namely: dolastane diterpene new for the genus Padina; phaeophytin and hidroxy-phaeophytin new for the family Dictyotaceae, and; mannitol first descri...

Antimicrobial Activities of Bacteria Associated with the Brown Alga Padina pavonica

Macroalgae belonging to the genus Padina are known to produce antibacterial compounds that may inhibit growth of human- and animal pathogens. Hitherto, it was unclear whether this antibacterial activity is produced by the macroalga itself or by secondary metabolite producing epiphytic bacteria. Here we report antibacterial activities of epiphytic bacteria isolated from Padina pavonica (Peacocks...

The calcareous brown alga Padina pavonica in southern Britain: population change and tenacity over 300 years

Understanding long-term persistence and variability in species populations can help to predict future survival, growth and distribution; however, sustained observations are exceedingly rare. We examine and interpret a remarkable record of the calcareous brown alga Padina pavonica (Phaeophyceae) at its northern limit on the south coast of England (50°N, 1-3°W) from 1680 to 2014, which is probabl...

Effects of Ocean Acidification on the Brown Alga Padina pavonica: Decalcification Due to Acute and Chronic Events

Since the industrial revolution, anthropogenic CO₂ emissions have caused ocean acidification, which particularly affects calcified organisms. Given the fan-like calcified fronds of the brown alga Padina pavonica, we evaluated the acute (short-term) effects of a sudden pH drop due to a submarine volcanic eruption (October 2011-early March 2012) affecting offshore waters around El Hierro Island (...
